After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, 16-year-old Luther Jackson enlists in the armed forces, only to be discovered and sent home. He returns 2 years later, of legal age, and trains to serve in an Army Field Hospital.
Life in an Army Field Hospital requires a lot of moving around. Luther Jackson sees England, France, Belgium and Germany as his group learns to quickly set up bases where they can treat critically wounded soldiers.
His postwar nursing career takes a restless Luther Jackson around the world. He returns home to work in pediatric surgery, where he experiences both heartbreak and fulfillment.
