    P.G. Caudell chose Navy because his two brothers chose Army and he wanted to be contrary.     The amphibious training would go on all night long. Troops would climb down cargo nets into landing craft, then climb back up. P.G. Caudell was a gunner on one of the 26 boats carried by the USS Adair, an attack transport.     You were not supposed to have a camera aboard ship, but P.G. Caudell had a miniature novelty camera that he broke down and brought with him anyway.     An attack transport had no refrigeration system, so landing craft gunner P.G. Caudell beat the spaghetti blues with a little canned meat courtesy of the Army.     On Victory Over Japan Day, all the alcohol smuggled aboard ship came out. P.G. Caudell was too young to buy it and he'd wondered about the extra packages in the cargo.
