As an engineering officer on an LSM, which stands for Landing Ship, Medium, Bob DeBoo was responsible for all mechanical operations on the ship. It was a flat-bottomed vessel, so it rolled mercilessly when the water got rough. While he was in the reserve, between the wars, he got a taste of life on the bigger ships. (4:30)

Recalled from the reserve for Korea, engineering officer Bob DeBoo was assigned to LST 803, another amphibious assault ship. The crew's first task was ferrying prisoners, then they performed general duties, sometimes in bone chilling sub-zero weather. (6:12)

While serving on an LST off the coast of Korea, engineering officer Bob DeBoo was entertained by a dog someone had smuggled on board as a pet. He was less amused by Inchon Charlie, piloting a North Korean biplane that would harass the ships. What nearly did the ship in, however, was a typhoon. (5:15)

Senator Bob Dole was sent to Italy in 1945 and assigned to the 10th Mountain Division as a young second lieutenant. Although the war in Europe would soon be over, Senator Dole found himself in the thick of combat outside of Castel d'Aiano. In an effort to try and save his downed radioman, he himself was badly wounded and had to remain on the battlefield through the heat of the battle. His father didn't talk about it much, but Bob Havens knew his Navy experience in the South Pacific was a big part of his life. Perhaps as a tribute to his father, who had passed away by then, Bob impulsively enlisted in the Navy on a lunch break. (4:41)

After a freezing boot camp at Great Lakes and photo intelligence school in Denver, Bob Havens was assigned to a patrol squadron in Maryland. The unit shadowed and tracked Russian trawlers and submarines off the East coast. (6:45)

There was no information for Bob Havens regarding his new assignment to a unit in San Diego. He didn't know what he was being groomed for but he was undergoing intense training, including the SERE course - survival, evasion, resistance, escape. (8:08)

After a lengthy background check, Bob Havens was cleared for top secret work in Thailand with a Navy unit that was placing listening devices along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. It was a dangerous job for the air crews, who had to fly low and slow. (8:25)
