The combat could be close at times with the Germans right up in your face. Glen Gooch was worried about one young soldier who wasn't very careful when the action started and, sure enough, he came to a bad end.

Air Rescue pilot Allyn Johnson spent a lot of time in the air off the coast of Korea waiting for someone to ask for help. The brass disapproved an award when he successfully rescued some downed Navy airmen but the Navy presented him with a special gift.

It was a pleasant surprise. After being relieved on the line in Korea, Paul Deverick was headed home. On the ship, they slept on those great Navy blankets and some of the guys tried to make souvenirs out of them. They didn't get away with it, but they did get discharged early.

When David Epstein was drafted in 1952, he chose the Marines, along with his buddies. He swore vengeance on his DI, but when he ran into him in Korea, it was another story. He spent a year there just behind the lines at the 38th parallel.

He didn't get seasick crossing the Pacific, but William Alli disliked the sea, nonetheless. It's too big. He finally arrived in Korea and he wasn't too thrilled with that, either. What was that smell?

After his captain heard one such group calling for help on the radio, Freddie Owens joined a patrol to find them, guided by a gunshot every few minutes. Once there, medic Daniel Torres volunteered to stay with those who couldn't move and protected them through the night with medicine and a machine gun.

One night, while Laurie was eating dinner, the USS Sanctuary got a call about a plane crash. She vividly remembers the patients coming aboard, and the aftermath of this incident, including one boy who was MIA. As difficult as this experience was, it was nothing compared to the Tet Offensive. New wounded were coming in constantly, and trying to care for all of them at once was emotionally exhausting. It was a group of wounded men who had pulled themselves together after the ill fated march to LZ Albany and were lost in the dark. George Forrest sent a patrol to find them, and in an incredible act of bravery, medic Daniel Torres stayed through the night with them and saved many men. Dee Friesen relates a funny story about one of the officers in his unit at Bien Hoa that had to do with painting some barracks. His roommate there was Dwight Kelly, who would sometimes fly missions with him.

After his Vietnam tour, Dee Friesen had a series of assignments including teaching at the Air Force Academy and doing research and testing for the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

When you're a pilot on the way to Vietnam, you stop in the Philippines for "Snake School." Dee Friesen enjoyed this survival training in which native tribesmen try to find you in the jungle. He was destined for Bien Hoa, a big base which was home to the 90th Attack Squadron.

Dee Friesen's tour of Vietnam was cut short. It was late in the war and the US was winding down operations. When he got to the airport in San Francisco, he was subjected to the usual harassment from anti-war protestors.

Slammed by powerful explosives, 2LT Sprenger describes the sheer terror of being blinded and badly injured. He relives the heroic efforts of those who helped him scramble to safety.

2LT Pinkerton dramatically recalls what happened after an explosive projectile slammed into an army truck injuring two buddies and killing an officer all the soldiers respected.

Justice details a too-close-for-comfort interaction with a vehicle-borne IED. The IED came as a complete surprise and the entire F.O.B. fell into what Justice could only describe as “chaos” immediately following the explosion. She suffered several injuries and had to work with the nurses back in Bagram and depend on the friendship of comrade Colonel Ellison to come back from the injuries.
