Growing up in a family of all boys, Brian West went to college in Illinois but couldn't avoid the draft so he decided to enlist in the air wing of the Marines. After going to flight school, Brian left Chicago for Vietnam nervous for the future. (5:55)

Brian West arrived in Danang as a First Lietenant, offloading in torrential rain, a metaphor for what was to come. After getting stationed at Marble Mountain, Brian West settled down into his company and started flying. (7:24)

Learning how to fly over Vietnam was difficult to master, but Brian West started to get the hang of it. West remembers the mission he was on when he was shot over Phu Bai. (9:18)

Brian West and his company had a few different ways to pass the time in between missions. Keeping spirits high was essential to staying sane while abroad. (5:57)

In Da Nang about to fly out to head back, Brian West and his company get hit by a rocket attack which shakes them up. Once they get in the air on the way home, he remembers the feeling of relief that rushed over him as they knew they were safe. Following his tour in Vietnam, Brian began instructing a new group of pilots in Pensacola where he had an interesting experience on New Year’s Eve. (9:08)

Brice Barnes

Growing up in Texas in a family with military history, Brice Barnes had a desire to enlist to help the world be a better place. Going into the Vietnam War, he understood and sympathized with the idea that the U.S. was looking to help the Vietnamese be better off. (4:52)

Leaving out of Travis Air Force Base, Brice Barnes remembers the stoic nature of the men he travelled over to Bien Hoa. Transitioning into the climate of Vietnam, he had a lot to get used to. (2:39)

For new soldiers in Vietnam, more training was imperative to get them ready for the changes they would face in country. During a mission, Brice Barnes found a huge weapons cache that they were worried might be more heavily guarded than they expected. (8:29)
