Clebe McClary
Vietnam
| 1st Reconnaissance Battalion
It was round after round of surgery for wounded Marine Clebe McClary after several hand grenades worked him over. He was a white lieutenant from rural South Carolina, and a black man from Charleston saved his life at the cost of his own. The blood is red and the uniform's green and the rest doesn't matter. (6:22)

He returned from Vietnam on a stretcher, so Clebe McClary didn't see much of the anti-war sentiment directed toward returning vets. After his recovery, he did encounter someone who didn't appreciate his service. (2:35)
We could have won any of the recent wars outright if the troops had been turned loose to do the job. That's the position of Vietnam veteran Clebe McClary, who wondered when he was there why they were taking the same hill over and over. (3:06)

Cliff West
WWII
| 1st Marine Division
Cliff West describes the journey to Pavuvu and shares his input on the training regimen provided in preparation for the move to Peleliu Island. (3:51)
Cliff West describes his initial fears and feelings of apprehension after witnessing the gruesome death of a Marine soon after arriving on Peleliu. He also discusses the complications he faced while being held up by Bloody Nose Ridge. He describes it as being an "actual jungle" which made it incredibly difficult to pick out targets. (2:47)
Cliff West describes his feelings of apprehension while journeying to Okinawa after witnessing the aftermath of the Kamikaze attack on the USS Bunker Hill. He also compares the landing at Pavuvu with the landing at Okinawa. (1:52)
Early one morning on Okinawa, out taking a sponge bath, Cliff West was shocked to see planes circle the sky. He identified them as American planes, and some troops on the ground waved to them when the entire squadron came down and bombed them. (2:42)
Quoted as being " a complicated difficult process that never worked," Cliff West attempts to describes the process of calling in for fire support. (2:13)
