It was an old Iraqi Air Force base in northern Iraq that the Americans settled into and began to fortify and improve. Dale Beatty noted the grass and trees near the base and they gave him the idea that maybe they were far enough north to avoid the heat of the desert. He was wrong. The base kept taking fire from the surrounding area, so patrols were started to find and eliminate the threat. (7:08)

The Iraqi insurgents would often set a new device in an existing crater on the road and pave it over to look like a road repair. Dale Beatty was in a Humvee escorting a fuel convoy and he was aware of this tactic. When he spotted one of these patches in the road, he instructed the driver to go around, but this turned out to be the wrong move. (5:34)

Within four days of being injured in Iraq, Dale Beatty was at Walter Reed hospital in Maryland where his wife was waiting. During his recovery, he was inspired by the actions of those who helped him to do something himself to help other wounded veterans. (2:32)

Though he was severely injured in Iraq, Dale Beatty has no animosity towards anyone. He acknowledges the good leaders that he had in the Army, who all shared one important quality which he tried to emulate, and he shares an experience he had in an Iraqi family's home that gave him a sobering perspective on our mission there. His three brothers joined the Navy, but when it was Dale Ney's turn, they had a waiting list, so he went with the Army. After basic training and MP school, he deployed to Korea as part of the American force remaining after the armistice. (3:40)

After a tour in postwar Korea, Dale Ney got adventurous and went Airborne. When the 173rd Airborne Brigade was seeking volunteers to replace men lost in Vietnam, his hand went up. Once he arrived in the war zone, he was fortunate to have an experienced platoon sergeant to show him the ropes, a man who had a Combat Infantryman's Badge from three different wars. (4:49)

Dale Ney made heliborne assaults all over South Vietnam and even into Cambodia to support CIA operations. On that mission, a vast tunnel complex used by the Viet Cong was rendered unusable with CS agent, a concentrated powdered form of tear gas. (3:57)

The jungle was so thick in Vietnam that you rarely saw anyone who shot at you, recalls Dale Ney, who also remembers the hellish devastation of napalm attacks. He already knew it's potential because of his training. (2:41)

There was no reason for them to be there. Dale Ney spotted a group of civilians working on a rubber plantation in a Communist stronghold. He fired in their direction and they scattered, but they had a radio and soon their compatriots set up an ambush which pinned down the Americans for over an hour. (6:36)
