A career officer and pilot in the Australian Navy, David Farthing was an instructor for a time, then it was his turn for a Vietnam tour. He would command the Australian component of a combined US/Australian helicopter company. A team of good young pilots was assembled and his wife commented years later, they were like the guys in Top Gun. (4:23)

David Farthing was the leader of the Australian contingent and he had to go over the head of the American commander when an unqualified pilot arrived as an instructor. The outcome of that incident tragically confirmed his opinion of the man. (5:31)

They were always short of pilots in the assault helicopter company, but he didn't think this guy was going to work out. He was a mariner and a pilot but David Farthing felt that he needed a more academic skill, so he went to law school while still serving as an Australian Navy officer. That allowed him to have a very nice second career when he left the service. (4:44)

David Greene

There were four boys and no girls in the family, so David Greene was experienced with laundry and cooking before he was drafted in 1943. He picked the Marines when given the choice because of a rather odd reason. (5:07)

There were some guys who grew quite a bit while they were in the Marines. David Greene was stuck at 5', 6" and was always on the end of the left side of the formations. He was tall enough to ship out for the Pacific, though, as a radioman. (5:35)

There was a table size mock up of Iwo Jima onboard ship. David Green saw it, so the geography of the place was no surprise. As the Marines worked their way up the island, the aim was to keep the line solid from shore to shore. He remembers strafing runs on the enemy and the opportunistic naval bombardment from ships that stayed through the battle. (7:05)
