Deciding to re-enlist after Vietnam, Donna Lowery deployed to Germany where she had a nice deployment there and found readjusting to post-war life easy. She ended up spending 26 years in the military and retired a sergeant major. Donna also has some thoughts on the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington D.C. (4:17)

Dorothy Managan

Dorothy Managan was at nursing school when the news came about the attack on Pearl Harbor. That made her even more determined and, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps while still at school. (5:13)

It was early in 1945 when Dorothy Managan went to Fort Dix to begin her training for the US Army Nurse Corps. She enjoyed trips into New York City to see plays and musicals. The next stop was Fort Lewis, where they decided she was going to be an instructor for the newer recruits. (3:55)

When Dorothy Managan was a nursing instructor at Fort Lewis, she was surprised one Sunday morning to find MP's milling about the church. There was a very important visitor for that morning's service. When the war ended, she was assigned to tend to returning American POW's. She considered it an honor. (5:37)

After the end of the war, Dorothy Managan decided to pursue a nursing degree instead of remaining in the US Army Nurse Corps. She hitched rides on Army planes to Fort Dix for her discharge, and then went back to college. (2:59)

World War II took the lives of many, but Army nurse Dorothy Managan is confident that the medical care was as good as it could have been for the time. She recalls how that war united the country like never before or since. (4:27)

Dorri Vu

They were Hmong refugees from Laos who had resettled in the United States. Dorri Vu's parents were teenagers when they arrived, met and got married and started a family in their new country. From a young age, she was fascinated with war history, especially the two World Wars. As she was coming of age, she felt the pull of service. (5:18)

The physical part of basic training was nothing to Dorri Vu, who had grown up in a farming family. She liked the other side of it, as well, learning to work in teams and trust your comrades. Her first MOS had her running a printing press but then she became a 37F, PSYOP specialist. (4:51)
