The war changed him for the better, says George Forrest, though it took a while to realize that family was more important than chasing a military career. A visit to Vietnam decades after the conflict made him wonder if it had been worth it. He does know two things, he would have liked a free ticket to a Packers game and he wishes the war was remembered for more than alleged atrocities and stoned troops. (7:05)

His Vietnam experienced influenced and guided every job he had throughout his life, says George Forrest. He was disappointed in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at first, but that changed when he visited. And he finally got his parade. (6:04)

George Horvath

George Horvath was born in Wisconsin, but his father's work took him to Akron, Ohio. When he got the letter, George put in for the Navy which set him on a historic path. (2:03)

George Horvath's first assignment was aboard the USS Chester (CL-1) where he was working in the boiler room. He was fortunate to survive the Japanese attacks on the ship which led it back to the States for repair. (1:36)

After being sent back stateside, George Horvath would board the USS Indianapolis which was being loaded with some very critical materials for the war effort. (2:57)

While underway, George Horvath would be sleeping underneath a gun turret when the USS Indianapolis passed a Japanese submarine. In only a matter of seconds would a massive casualty event occur. (2:38)

The USS Indianapolis sunk in a matter of minutes, leaving hundreds of men stranded in the water. There was no help nearby. Days would pass as men fell victim to the ocean. (7:06)

George Howard

He came from the pristine Montana wilderness. George Howard loved that part but he wanted to leave and do something else. He went to see a recruiter and the Marine dress blues snagged another one. (5:35)

George Howard wasn't a Recon Marine but he was serving with them in the motor pool. He made sure to outperform them at PT so they knew he had what it takes. After 9/11 everyone in the unit was anxious to do something about it but it took a long time before most of them got their chance in Iraq. (4:14)

George Howard gives a shout out to his buddies in the 1st Recon motor pool. If they had not deployed to Iraq, he would have continued on to become a Recon Marine himself but war has a way of changing plans. He had volunteered for motorcycle school so when he hit Kuwait it was on a Kawasaki. (Caution: strong language) (5:10)
