After his time in the special services for Vietnam, Henry Newinn joined the Phoenix Program. As soon as the CIA looked at his records and saw what he had done previously, they thought he would be a good fit for the program. However, it wasn't long until the Americans decided to pull out of the war, leaving the south to fend for themselves. (6:31)

After the cease fire ended, the North Vietnamese took over the south which prompted Newinn to flee with his family. His objective was to go to America with his wife and his one year old son. Eventually he was able to acquire a sponsorship with a US veteran he knew and got transport to the United States. It was difficult to find his way in the states initially, working jobs as a bus boy. After some time his daughter was born, and now he couldn't be more grateful for the American life he leads today. (5:19)

Times were tough when Henry Rice was a kid. He got along, though, and he had a good time hitchhiking around Texas and sneaking into Mexico. He joined the Army on a lark in 1940 with two buddies and, after the war started, they volunteered for the infantry. Wait, we're doing what? (6:11)

Henry Rice was a soldier in a support role when the war started, but he switched to the infantry and joined the combat just as the Allies were storming into Germany itself. He was surprised when they stopped short of Berlin and then he found out why. His unit went to Bavaria, which was good duty. Just don't get caught with the local girls. (4:55)

He had the points so he was heading home. Henry Rice took a train to Camp Lucky Strike, where he and his buddy ran the games of chance. Only one problem, how to get that cash back to the States. When he got there, he got out, got married, got a job, got bored and got back in the Army. (4:58)

Henry Rice was having second thoughts. He had gone back in the Army, but they put him at Fort Polk, which was a miserable place to be. He pulled some strings and got better assignments, jobs with a lot of travel. Then it was a tour in Europe on a general's staff. That plum position eventually took him to Washington DC, which sounded great at first. (5:27)

You went unassigned to Vietnam, a roll of the dice. Sgt. Major Henry Rice joined the staff at 1st Brigade, 1st Division headquarters. That didn't sound like he would be in a chopper much, but he was. He was offered a prestigious assignment at MACV, but he was ready to retire after three wars. (3:57)

Henry Sayler

Henry Sayler grew up with a father who was in the Army and Coast Guard artillery in World War I, and was always exposed to the ways of the military. His family was moving around a lot while he was growing up, and they were friends with Dwight D. Eisenhower long before his presidency. Sayler went to West Point for college, trained to be a pilot at flying school, and graduated three months early due to US involvement in World War II. (4:28)

When it came time for him to go to Europe, Sayler was shipped overseas on the Queen Elizabeth, outran all the German submarines, and arrived in Glasgow, Scotland. Shortly after, they went to England to start preparing for the D-Day invasion, though there wasn't much preparation for him, that was more done by the 9th Air Force. He talks about the men he fought beside, and the details of D-Day itself. He was tasked with flying up and down the beachhead to get a top view of the entire invasion. (5:22)

While up in the air, it was Sayler's job as a pilot to escort the bombers, and there was one time where he experienced engine trouble during one of these missions. He shares the experience of one of the most difficult missions he flew during his time as a pilot, and how he became appointed to Eisenhower's Intelligence Staff after his flying days were over.
