Laying in a foxhole during a mortar barrage, Jack King thought for a moment about sticking a foot up and possibly getting a million dollar wound. That feeling passed. Somehow he got hold of some lieutenant's bars and Jack King reveals how this led to the Marine mortar company getting some free transportation courtesy of the Army motorpool. There were aphorisms in the Marine Corps that started with, "old gunney says...." Jack King started a new saying while in Korea, and the unit carried it forward after he came home. His high school friends said they'd just joined the Navy Reserve, so Jack LeCroy thought that sounded fine for him, too. When he was activated, he joined the crew of the USS Cone, a destroyer. (4:02)

After a nice cruise to Saint Thomas, the men of the destroyer USS Cone got orders to Vietnam. The mission was offshore bombardment and interdiction fire. Jack LeCroy was a gunner's mate on one of the five inch guns and he describes the workings of the weapon. (5:21)

Jack LeCroy never set foot in Vietnam. He was a gunner's mate on the USS Cone, a destroyer engaged in offshore bombardment, and when the ship was not on a mission, it headed for ports elsewhere. (4:32)

Gunner's mate Jack LeCroy returned from his Vietnam tour without encountering any protests. The only one he'd ever seen was during a port visit in Japan. He finds some parallels between the jungle warfare of the ground troops in Vietnam and the suburban warfare today's combatants must face. (2:39)

Jack Lemonds was drafted in 1943 and headed to the luckiest basic training site of the war, Miami Beach. That was the place where Army Air Corps recruits began their journey. As a group of new B-24 crews readied to make the flight to England, one of them crashed into a mountain in New Hampshire. Undeterred, waist gunner Jack Lemonds and a host of others donned their heated suits and made the long, cold flight.
