No one on LCI-425 had ever heard of Iwo Jima, but they could see on the map how strategic it was. Sailor Jim Kennedy remembers the landing as "mayhem" and, at one point, had to operate the helm with one hand and the engine order telegraph with the other. (11:29)
When sailor Jim Kennedy first saw his ship, LCI-425, he was disappointed. "It was not a handsome ship." After a trip through the Panama Canal, the crew had liberty in San Diego, split into two shifts. What would happen if you took both shifts? (8:49)
