There were a lot of negative things written about the Phoenix Program after the war, but to military advisor Joe Bruckner, who worked with operatives from the program, it was effective in rooting out Communist infiltrators. (2:31)

Joe Bruckner was fortunate. When he returned from Vietnam, it was to Georgia, which had a high level of support for the military, and to a loving family. He knew there were many who were not so fortunate. His war experience had made him more patriotic and less likely to complain. (3:52)

Joe Chan

Growing up in Indiana, Joe Chan enlisted in the ROTC at his university and ended up choosing it as a career. Training during school gave him the opportunity to learn a lot more about various aircraft and how to best operate them. (5:35)

Going to Military Airlift Command school, Joe Chan chose his career path early because he wanted to travel the world. He ended up becoming a Forward Air Controller, tasked with locating and marking enemy forces on the ground. (5:57)
