Draftee Ken Meyer headed to Navy boot camp in March of 1944. During induction, he was given a signal test and he was lost so he just gave random answers. He scored so well, the Navy made him a signalman. (3:48)

After signal school, Ken Meyer was assigned to an LST, the largest amphibious craft in the inventory. He recalls the terrible typhoon they encountered and how he could almost reach out and touch the water at the top of a roll. It was a very rough riding ship because of the flat bottom. (4:55)

Ken Meyer boarded an LST that had already seen action in North Africa, but was now destined for the Pacific. Their trip was slowed by engine trouble and, by the time it was fully provisioned and got to the war zone, nearly every island had already been secured. They did see a kamikaze hit on another ship on the very day the war ended. (5:57)

After the war, the men of LST-994 had the sad duty of repatriating Japanese from Korea. There was disease and death and Ken Meyer recalls the heart wrenching scenes he witnessed. This was his last duty before returning home to family life. (3:20)

Ken Morgenthaler

Ken Morgenthaler remembers his joining the military at a young age and thoroughly enjoying it. He found a sense of camaraderie with the members of his unit and respected his drill sergeants for working them that hard. (5:18)

Once arriving at Fort Stewart, Ken Morgenthaler had to adjust to the intense training that went on there. He looks back on those times fondly as putting him in the best shape of his life. (4:22)

During training, Ken Morgenthaler tried to stay positive during the toughest moments of training. Keeping a disciplined mindset was key to getting through the rigorous times. (4:41)

Ken Morgenthaler remembers getting the call to go overseas and feeling ready to get deployed. Once arriving in the Iraqi desert, the rough conditions of the desert were striking to Morgenthaler and his unit. (10:14)

While driving the tank in country, Ken Morgenthaler had to face some difficult terrain that led to some complications. Though they took some mortar fire, the United States Air Force was extremely effective in taking out enemy combatants. (11:36)
