Lloyd Pittman was lucky enough to be among the first in his unit to be sent home from England after the fall of Germany. He had a nice leave back home but the war in the Pacific had him scheduled to learn to fly the B-29. (This interview made possible with the support of OLAF FRANK GOUCHIE.) (2:37)

Lofton Hill

While in the CCC, Lofton Hill helped build the Fort Benning jump field. Two years later, he was training there as a paratrooper. After training, his unit was sent to the west coast, so he figured he was bound for the Pacific. (4:20)

They were packed in like cattle on the troop ship. When they docked at Pearl Harbor, Lofton Hill watched the flag raised every morning on the wreckage of the USS Arizona. He was soon in the Philippines, fending off banzai attacks and enjoying the canned tangerines he found in the Japanese camps. (4:02)

Lofton Hill saw a buddy take a near direct hit from a mortar shell. He caught some shrapnel himself but his bandolier deflected it. It wasn't long after they secured their area in Luzon that the war ended. (3:24)

After the Japanese surrender, Lofton Hill was certain the enemy troops in the hills in Luzon did not know about it. Soon, his unit was in Japan, freeing and sending home American POW's, who had received harsh treatment from their captors. He was put on MP detail, where he couldn't make much sense of what he was hearing from the civilians. (3:28)

Lon Edgar Morris, Jr.

The draft came for Lon Edgar Morris, Jr. There was still some war left to fight and he was sent to infantry training to prepare for deployment to the Pacific. After a month of zig-zagging across the ocean, he landed in the Philippines. (4:28)

He had never seen anything like what he saw in the Philippines. Lon Edgar Morris, Jr. recalls how the streets were clogged with desperate, hungry people. He was also disturbed by the decaying bodies on the beach when he came ashore. (4:40)

While Lon Edgar Morris, Jr. was serving in the Philippines, his camp was hit by a tidal wave, something he never wants to experience again. A different kind of problem vexed him with the local population, sorting out the Japanese from the Filipinos. (3:22)

The Japanese prisoners built their own prison camp, under the watchful eye of Lon Edgar Morris, Jr. and the other GI's there in the Philippines. He explains how, during the fighting, the Japanese were hampered by the poor quality of their weapons. The GI's, on the other hand, had the magnificent M1. (3:58)

Lon Edgar Morris, Jr. was one of the GI's tasked with constructing a huge prison camp in the Philippines. He was skillful at adapting and repairing the electrical equipment they found there and this became a career path for him after the war. (2:23)
