Michael Gold

WWII | 708th Bomb Squadron, 447th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force

It was twice a day roll call and cold showers in the POW camp for B-17 navigator Michael Gold. But, as a non-smoker, he could trade his Red Cross cigarettes for a prized delicacy that he loves to this day. Through secret means, the Allied prisoners were able to keep up with news from the war. The war was surely lost for the Germans, but in the POW camp where B-17 Navigator Michael Gold was held, the extreme Nazi ideology was still being played out. A Jewish and black "ghetto" barracks was created in the compound and he was forced to move there. It was also about this time that success for the Allied bombers translated to lost rations for the men. This caused a change to the conversation in the evenings. (3:13)
One morning at roll call, the German Commandant of the POW camp announced that President Roosevelt had passed away. Soon, the guards disappeared and the Russian Army liberated the camp. After being sent to Camp Lucky Strike, he went out on a lark to see Europe before he left. (2:21)

Michael Marshall

He was used to discipline, so Marine boot camp wasn't so bad for Michael Marshall. When the drill instructor asked if anyone was unhappy and wanted to go to the Army, he thought surely no one would step forward. (4:56)
When he stepped off the plane in Da Nang, Michael Marshall knew this was not a place you wanted to be. It was hot and there was a strange smell. Within days, he was with his Marine unit at An Hoa, providing security for bridge building engineers. It did not take long before he saw death. (6:17)
The Marines did what they could to help villagers with sanitation and health needs, but Michael Marshall could feel the chilly distance between them. His company commander was Captain Jerome Cooper, who held an important distinction. (7:00)

Michael Marshall was with the first group of Marines to establish the base at Con Thien, near the DMZ. As they carved a road through the countryside on the way in, he was sure the enemy would strike. (2:18)
It was early in the battle when Michael Marshall pointed to the machine gunner to show him where to set up his weapon. An enemy round tore into his arm and he was knocked to the ground. The rapid response of his buddies and the evacuation team was outstanding. Back home, his employer before the war continued the good work. (5:09)
