It was a miserable winter in Waza Khwa. It was cold, there was deep snow and the menu was limited. Michael Trevino toughed it out and, just thirty days from shipping back to the States, the Humvee he traveling in was hit with a devastating IED planted by the Taliban. (8:31)
It was Michael Trevino's birthday when he traveled home from his first Afghanistan deployment. He was on crutches but that didn't stop the company's birthday tradition that left him with a little red skin. His parents came to North Carolina to see him and they treated all his friends to a night on the town and then some. (4:10)
On his second deployment to Afghanistan, Michael Trevino's platoon was sent to provide security for a body recovery operation at a remote river. The troops were lured into an ambush and that began an epic three day running firefight. (9:20)

His dad was a Marine so Michael Trost was pulling his own weight as a child. As an adult, he joined the Army. That'll show him! As a reservist, he got into a civil affairs battalion and finally had a deployment in Iraq. He was ready. (4:39)
Mobilization is a lot of work for a sergeant like Michael Trost. Paperwork and medical stuff. He nearly didn't make the tour because of high cholesterol. He persevered and he was glad because it had been a long wait for action and he had assembled a great team (5:04)
The business of a civil affairs unit is trying to win the hearts and minds of a local populace. You have to deal with a lot of things that aren't in the book. Michael Trost had a great team with him in Afghanistan but it was tough in a tribal society. Finding humor in the daily grind provided a little relief, like the trouble he had with a containerized housing unit, or CHU, which housed the showers. (4:49)
