When Phillip Gamache entered Sasebo for occupation duty, he was amazed at how clean the place was, despite repeated bombings. After scaring a few Japanese traffic cops, the Marines moved into the city and were greeted by the residents but they were puzzled by the Japanese latrines. (5:31)

After occupation duty in Japan, Phillip Gamache had one more stop before returning home and that was Peleliu. There were still a lot of Japanese on the island under the watchful eyes of the Marines but there were some who had not been captured. (3:08)

It was a long trip home from Peleliu to San Diego. There were no cheering crowds but Phillip Gamache didn't care. What he cared about was the plush Pullman cars they initially traveled in before being replaced by less comfortable accommodations. When he found out he was at the top of the list for promotion to corporal, he had to take action. (7:08)

Phillip Gow was aboard the USS Menard when his ship was sent to Saipan for just a day. He remembers the horrible scene that awaited them upon arrival. (1:05)

Naval Officer Phillip Gow recalls the massive air and sea combat in the South China Sea during the invasion of Okinawa. Gow was a gunner aboard the USS Menard. His boat shot down one enemy plane, but they also lost several men. (4:40)

Naval Officer Phillip Gow went to boot camp in the Great Lakes and from there went to Kodiak and Cold Bay, Alaska where the long hours of daylight created strange circumstances for the men. (3:19)

Soon after the war ended, Phillip Gow was sent back to the Pacific to continue transporting crews and supplies, including the 1st Marines occupation force in Nagasaki. He particularly remembers what Nagasaki looked like soon after the atomic bomb. (1:35)

Pooch Pace

Growing up in the Great Depression was tough for Pooch Pace, but fortunately they were able to provide their own food through the worst of it. In 1945, Pooch would opt for the Merchant Marines and the Navy, but ultimately would join the Army Air Corps.
