As possibly the youngest Chief Petty Officer in the Navy, Roy Dugger had no hash marks on his sleeve. This made him a "Slick Arm Chief," which could have made him the butt of jokes, but an older Chief set this straight with the men when he coined a colorful new term to describe the young sailor. After the war ended in the Pacific, Roy Dugger returned to Texas A&M and then a teaching job. Assigned to teach agriculture to a class of returned veterans, he had just one problem. The day he received his master's degree from Texas A&M, Roy Dugger found orders in his mailbox recalling him from the reserve to active duty. North Korea had moved on the South. After his recovery from a serious wound, Roy Dugger spent the rest of the Korean War ashore in Pearl Harbor. His education background made him perfect for the administrative job with the 14th Naval District. For Brooklynite Roy Hector, basic training in the heat of Texas was a real jolt. After a cold, miserable Atlantic crossing, he joined the 79th Infantry Division in France, where one of the sergeants had some startling advice. (3:25)

When Roy Hector got to the Siegfried Line during the push into Germany, it rained 23 days straight. Once he crossed the Rhine further into Germany, his unit was pinned down by a German 88, and they had a surprise when they captured the gun crew. On another occasion, they found an empty machine gun nest and heard boisterous singing nearby. (5:29)

After close encounters with a couple of artillery shells, Roy Hector encountered a new Lieutenant, who confronted German tanks waving a pearl handled revolver. The officer soon realized his error. For his own weapon, Hector preferred a rifle over automatic weapons. (3:53)

At the end of the war, Roy Hector's first assignment was managing an Army laundry, which he didn't like at all. When the 79th Infantry Division was disbanded, he joined the Constabulary force and served at Nuremberg, where he built the translation infrastructure for the war crime trials. (4:07)
