Allied POW's were being sent further and further into the interior of Germany. Bill Livingstone arrived at Stalag XIII and found an incredible array of nationalities. Again, the sound of approaching guns meant the prisoners would be moved, this time on foot. He and his buddies brought along an unusual item they hoped to trade for food. (5:29)

Bill Livingstone was lucky he had no problems with his feet on the forced march from one prison camp to another. As they marched further into Germany, a guard let slip the somber news that FDR had died. The men arrived at Stalag VII-A, the largest of all the POW camps. There, he had a memorable chat with a British prisoner who had been there since Dunkirk. (4:42)

Bill Livingstone had only been at his third prison camp about a week when the guards disappeared. Patton's tanks could be heard nearby and, soon, one crashed through the front gate. Liberation had come and it wasn't long before the men were enjoying coffee and donuts at Camp Lucky Strike. (5:18)

Though he had been a POW, Bill Livingstone had such a late entry into the war that he didn't have enough points to be discharged. He worked in a personnel office until the time came. He pays tribute to his friends who didn't make it, along with the many others who made that sacrifice. (6:54)

Bill McCarthy outlines his war odyssey with the 1st Armored Division, which started in North Africa and ended in Italy. The radioman didn't face much danger in Africa, but when he got to Italy he had some close calls. (This interview is audio only.) (4:25)

He was safe in North Africa, except for the occasional air raid. The real problem for Bill McCarthy was the larcenous locals and the train rides in the notorious forty-and-eights. (This interview is audio only.) (4:12)

Bill McCarthy was a radio operator attached to a forward observer unit in Italy. He had just narrowly avoided a round from a German 88 when the Stuka came screaming down. He dove under a tank, there was a blast and he lost consciousness. (This interview is audio only.) (6:21)

After recovering from an injury, radio operator Bill McCarthy went to a new unit, the 4th Tank Battalion. When they found out he could splice wire, he became the wire chief for the unit. This was a busy job because the combat telephone lines were constantly being damaged and cut. (This interview is audio only.) (3:20)

Bill McCarthy has a Presidential Unit Citation on his sleeve, thanks to FDR, who gave the award to his unit shortly before his death. But that wasn't the highlight of his service in Italy. That would be what happened when he visited the Vatican. (This interview is audio only.) (5:34)
