Tom Cash recounts the heart wrenching losses suffered in the Hurtgen Forest. In one day, his unit was reduced to less than a fourth of its strength. Many were killed with a baiting tactic involving tracer bullets. Then it was close combat, with bayonets and grenades. (6:45)

He slept in a cold foxhole most of the time. Tom Cash was near the Siegfried Line in the Hurtgen Forest, where the fighting was fierce. A tree burst from German artillery stuck down his sergeant and soon he was wounded as well. (4:13)

Tom Cash learned the techniques of mortar targeting in basic training, but in combat, they were quickly modified. The mortermen in his unit were so efficient in firing that captured German soldiers were asking to see the automatic mortar. Once he was given a riskier task, night patrol behind enemy lines. (5:20)

Wounded in the Hurtgen Forest, Tom Cash was sent to Miami for rehabilitation. Then it was on to Texas where he trained inductees, sharing insights gained in his recent combat. After one last assignment at the chemical warfare school, he finally had enough points for discharge. (2:41)

While attending Eastern Kentucky University, Tom Coffey was not just enrolled in ROTC, he was a member of the Pershing Rifles. He graduated and then received a draft notice. Eager to do his part, he entered on a track to attend Officer Candidate School. (5:51)

At Officer Candidate School, Tom Coffey was attracted to intelligence work. That was at the top of his dream sheet and he got it. After eight weeks of intel school, his team was formed at Fort Bragg and then shipped out for Vietnam. (5:57)

It was very disorganized. That was Tom Coffey's impression when he got to Vietnam. Eventually, the Army did get him to Camp Enari and the headquarters of the 4th Infantry Division. Then he was assigned to Kon Tum which had an outlying fire base at Dak To. That fire base was destined to be well known in the history of the war. (5:42)

Intelligence Officer Tom Coffey was the most knowledgeable about the area so he was assigned to the fire base at Dak To. He knew what was coming. The NVA had amassed across the border in Cambodia and their target was Dak To. Part 1 of 3. (9:25)

The General said we're going to charge the hill. Tom Coffey was the Intelligence Officer but he was only a 2nd Lieutenant so, when he recommended against that, he was overruled.
