When Corpsman Joseph Poquiz got to Iraq with his Marine unit, he quickly found out that his medical kit made him a target. He split it up and concealed it, adapting like he was taught. The insurgents made IED's from a huge array of old munitions and detonation devices including one made from discarded IV tubing. (5:52)

At first, the wounds were simple. A lot of frag wounds and Corpsman Joseph Poquiz was thankful. One day when he was on radio watch inside an abandoned house, an insurgent threw a hand grenade into the room. There were two Marines in there with him. He was the lucky one. He only had a concussion. (9:11)

During his second tour of Iraq, Corpsman Joseph Poquiz was based in Fallujah, where he helped train medics in the Iraqi police force. He knew some of them were former insurgents, but it was an important task, helping them establish some order in the war torn country. (4:18)

Joseph Williams

When Joseph Williams heard that the Marine Corps would begin accepting black recruits, he immediately joined up. It was 1942, so the training at Camp Lejeune was segregated, with the black Marines in their own camp at Montford Point. (3:09)

Joseph Williams was one of the first black Marines, serving in an anti-aircraft unit defending the Marshall Islands. The guns were advanced for the time, with a computer-like fire director that translated weather data into fire control. (4:12)

He was in the Marshall Islands to man an anti-aircraft battery. Joseph Williams recalls how the guns would respond before attacking planes got close, thanks to the radar unit. He also remembers the furious typhoons that would keep him hunkered down in bunkers. (4:10)
