Josh Lipe had a feeling they were headed into an ambush and he was right. He should have been OK. He was in the second truck and they usually tried to take out the first or the last, but in this IED attack, his truck was hit. The blast knocked him out and when he came to, he began to check on the rest of his guys. Their reactions when they saw him let him know how badly wounded he was. (Caution: strong language) (8:54)

He walked into the hospital at Al Asad under his own power but Josh Lipe was soon out cold for 36 hours. He'd been badly injured in an IED attack and was in a frenzy when he woke up. After recovering from his injuries, Josh Lipe was on the field to greet his unit when they returned from Iraq. He became an instructor in several areas, first in the Marine Corps and then in the civilian world. He'd nearly been killed by an IED but he felt sure he was saved so he could teach others. (5:04)

Hailing from the middle of nowhere, as he puts it, Josh Ray Person set aside his idea of going to medical school when he started reading about special forces in an English class. Where do these guys come from? He started working out and running. (5:02)

During training, Josh Ray Person was looked down on because he came straight from the School of Infantry instead of paying his dues as a grunt. Nevertheless he did become a Reconnaissance Marine and, by a strange chain of events beginning on 9-11-01, was part of the earliest deployment of troops to Afghanistan. (5:25)

They were the envy of everyone in the US military. Recon Marine Josh Ray Person and his unit were in Australia when the 9/11 attacks occurred and, before the year was out, they were among the first American boots on the ground in Afghanistan. Next stop, Iraq. (5:16)
