While underway, George Horvath would be sleeping underneath a gun turret when the USS Indianapolis passed a Japanese submarine. In only a matter of seconds would a massive casualty event occur.
The USS Indianapolis sunk in a matter of minutes, leaving hundreds of men stranded in the water. There was no help nearby. Days would pass as men fell victim to the ocean.
